💤 When Sleep Plays Hard to Get…

One of my biggest motivators for starting my own spiritual retreats was to help people sleep better by learning to regulate their emotions, calm their nervous systems, and reconnect with themselves in a deeper way.
Want to live a long life? Sleep.
Want to prevent disease? Sleep.
Want a stronger immune system? More joy? Less inflammation? The answer is still:
sleep.
Holistic retreats like the ones we offer at SPA have been shown to improve sleep quality by addressing the root causes—emotional, physiological, and mental. According to a 2024 report from The Center for Advancing Health, 40% of people with insomnia also have a psychiatric disorder. That’s just one of many disturbing stats.
➡️
1 in 4 women and
1 in 5 men suffer from insomnia.
➡️ Insufficient sleep is linked to cardiovascular disease, anxiety, depression, diabetes, obesity, and more.
The good news? Most of these conditions are preventable—and the most powerful prevention tool we have is simple: getting 7–9 hours of high-quality sleep every night.
Which brings me to a very personal story...
If you’ve ever tossed and turned at 2 a.m., praying for sleep to come, this one’s for you.
Insomnia is like that rude, uninvited guest who shows up banging on your door without warning—and then overstays their welcome. If I’m honest, if there’s any hatred in my heart, it’s for insomnia.
Sleep Is Sacred
Sleep isn’t a luxury in my world. It’s a necessity. It ranks above everything else, because without it, I can’t show up for myself or anyone else. It’s when we heal, when we process our emotions, and—yes—when we receive spiritual guidance from the Divine.
Although… if some of my dreams are messages from above, then God definitely has a sense of humor.
I’ve had dreams where I was best friends with Machine Gun Kelly. Another time, I was on tour with Bruno Mars, and I was genuinely disappointed to wake up. That one felt personal. 😄
I’ve Tried It All (Almost)
Like most people struggling with sleep, I’ve tried everything. Herbal teas. Warm baths. No screens. Magnesium. Lavender oil. Melatonin. Meditation. You name it. Some helped a little. Most didn’t help at all.
But a few months ago, I stumbled on something surprisingly simple that actually worked.
The Visualization That Put Me to Sleep
One night, wide awake and frustrated, I imagined myself walking down a staircase—step by slow step. With each step, I silently repeated, “I am going into deep sleep.”
Each step took me further into a calm, gentle darkness. Not the scary kind. The peaceful kind. The kind that feels like floating. Before I knew it, I was out.
And I’ve used it ever since. It works more often than not—and it’s free, easy, and available any time.
Give It a Try
I’m grateful that post menopause and hormone replacement therapy have made insomnia less frequent for me. But if it ever returns, I know how to find my way back to rest, one step at a time.
Try it tonight. It might just work for you, too.
